gnuchess

Hi
I downloaded gnuchess and xboard but I am unable to create the book
I followed the instructions from the INSTALL file:

Now it is time to compile the book. Do:

        ln -s ../book/book.pgn
        ./gnuchess
        book create book.pgn
        quit

It creates the symbolic link, start gnuchess but with the command 

book create book.pgn

nothing happens.
I tried even with 

book compile 

(from README file) but nothing happen.
The program with xboard function but without the book
I have SuSE Linux 7.1
