I used 4.2.1 xboard with Gnuchess 5.2 for ages with no problems.

Will "upgrade" to 4.2.3 and see if I can reproduce, may take a
day or two.

Don't have a SUN to play chess on alas.

Has this always been a problem, are you just starting, or did
you upgrade a component (If so which)?

You might try 4.2.1 to see if it is a problem caused by an
xboard change - I know better than to ask if it is an xboard
problem, most of the problems with xboard and chess programs,
are down to the chess programs, as Tim's stuff is pretty solid.
