Patches to common.h

I've been looking at making some improvements to GNU Chess,
but it's not easy for a newcomer to add anything when
the common header file (common.h) has almost no comments in it.
So, I've added a number of comments into common.h that try to
explain some of its contents (et? Is that extra-terrestrial?).

Please accept this patch
that adds the comments; I think these comments will help
anyone else trying to dive into the code for the first time.

Attached is a simple unified diff, suitable for patch.
