status of emacs on console

Hello.

I would like to know if there are plans for emacs to support
syntax-hilighting on the console of a GNU/Linux system, and if
so, if there is any way I can help with that.

I tend to use systems which are undernurished memory-wise and
X+emacs is a bit too much -- and so is xemacs, which does a
_very_ rudimentary s-h on console but is bigger than X+emacs :)

I'm stuck with mc's mcedit, fte, or vim. The jury is still out.
