All I know is that puny punk less(1) program can do it [at least on
the first screen [it said 6% when I viewed a 400 line file] so there's
no reason the almighty emacs shouldn't.

I don't know the details. Show me percentage of days left till the
Christmas shopping season and I'd probably be happy.
