Why do you need the -Wl in practice?

[I agree that the current system is unfortunate and I recall not
understanding the prefix-args business.]

 EZ> Does it work to say "LDFLAGS=whatever ./configure", and then "make"?

That propagates a different default set to the Makefile and may affect
configured features, but it won't address this issue as such.
