I don't know if this is a problem still in the latest version, but
with .emacs having (setq dabbrev-case-replace nil), when one puts the
cursor at the end of line 2:

Only with the motorcycle battery can I go for weeks without worrying
about recharging. Recharging can be done with standard car battery
        methods.

and hits r ESC / repeatedly, one doesn't conveniently get the lower
case "recharging" one wants...

Perhaps dabbrev-expand should be smartened to recognize it is not at
the beginning of the sentence, and therefore offer lower case
versions... but what about proper names? Well, it could say, "did I
find an earlier instance of this word capitalized but not at the
beginning of a sentence? But what about previous instances of proper
names found at beginnings of sentences? Well, then it could check the
ispell database to be sure it's not a non-proper name... hmm, maybe
check there in all cases... [a grad school project].
