    As far as I can tell, splitting `load-path' into two is making the
    user-option more complex rather than less.

More complex than what, in what aspect?  When we are comparing
several alternatives, each of which involves various elements,
the comparison is not useful if you do not specify that.

This change would add a small amount of complexity to the variables
used from Lisp, but it is a kind of complexity that is not very hard
to handle.

This is much less complex than the other solutions that are being
proposed.
