I'm guessing that emacs-mule is a good coding system for message mode
buffers because then Gnus can be sure that all characters that Emacs
can encode will be represented in the auto-save files. (I use Latin-1
as the default encoding, and what happens when I happen to write a
Chinese email? Gnus might get really confused if it didn't use
emacs-mule all the time for message buffers.)
But of course it's inconvenient that write-region uses the `wrong'
coding system by default. Hm. I don't know what to do about that.
