C-l centers vertically but not horizontally

For years we've used C-l:
C-l runs the command recenter: Center point in window and redisplay frame.

However recently I was tinkering with C-x 3,
split-window-horizontally, and one can see that C-l and its help
documentation apparently predate split-window-horizontally, as one
would hope for the same centering to be carried out horizontally, or
at least a mention of how to do that...

By the way, hscroll-global-mode is not mentioned in Info. I'd at
least mention if just saying
(hscroll-global-mode)
in .emacs is how to use it.
