I just looked at the function recover-file, and it never deletes the
file, just signals an error if it finds the time stamp of the file to
be older than the main file.

Can you reproduce what did you type when Emacs deleted the file
#creature.c#?  This could have happened if you tried to save the file
creature.c, because Emacs always deletes the auto-save file when you
save the buffer.  (That's why the auto-save file only stays on disk if
Emacs crashed or you exit Emacs without saving your edits.)

Anyway, did you try to recover the deleted file from the Recycle Bin?
It might still be there.
