Hmmm?  Dired allows you to pick a file with a mouse (unfortunately,
it's with button2 and its dired-mouse-find-file-other-window, but that
can be changed).

Oh.  You mean that "File|Open" asks for the name of the file which you
have to enter via the keyboard?  Well, that could be changed to have
it find-file the current directory from which you could then mouse
click to the file you want.

Better yet.  Could button1 (or 2 or 3) _in_ _the_ _minibuffer_ be
assigned to newline so that, after doing "File|Open" (or most any menu
command), with a simple click, you could say "execute the command with
the default value"?
