    But if the only thing people expect shortcuts to be good for is
    "symlink to an executable" kind of thing, then I really think
    Emacs shouldn't do more than either redirect find-file or provide
    a major-mode that displays the content nicely.

If it should only affect running an executable, then maybe it should
be implemented in the parts of Emacs which run subprocesses.
