One thing I've noticed about shortcuts to documents is that when you
open the target using the shortcut, and then save the document, the
Last Modified date on /both/ the shortcut /and/ the target are
touched.  However, if you open and save the target without using the
shortcut, only the date on the target is touched.  So in order to
mimic this behavior, Emacs would need to touch the shortcut used to
visit a file if that file's buffer were modified and then saved back
to that file.
