In GNU Emacs 20.4.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit)
 of Fri Oct 29 1999 on tfkp02
configured using `configure --prefix=/nfs/common --libexecdir=/nfs/common/lib
--bindir=/nfs/common/lib/emacs/bin/i686-Linux --with-gcc --with-pop --with-x
--with-x-toolkit=athena'

The file refcard.tex that comes with emacs 20.7 offers the option to
generate a three-column output if one sets

\columnsperpage=3

This should result in 2 pages with 3 columns on each page. However,
with my recent teTeX installation (teTeX 1.0) the dvi file I get is
scrambled: Somehow the height of the columns are incompatible with
the value of \vsize so that TeX generates three pages of output.

Moreover, the value

 \vsize 7.95in

works only with letter size paper. It is too small for a4 paper.

Using the settings

  \vsize 7.65in
  \normalbaselineskip=.7\normalbaselineskip

I get 2 pages of dvi output that can be printed using a4 paper
(but the reduced value for \normalbaselineskip makes it rather
difficult to read the printout).

It would be nice if refcard.tex could be fixed such that
\columnsperpage=3 can be used with both letter and a4 paper.

Roland
