I tried that in an xterm on the same machine where I could reproduce the 
problem in a telnet session, and the xterm session doesn't show the 
problem!  (Neither does the MS-DOS port, btw.)

TERM is set to vt100 and TERMINFO points to a vt100 entry hacked up to 
add capabilities (such as `op') required by Emacs to use colors.
