can't see buffers that start with space

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

If I visit or create a file which starts with a space, I can't see it
in the buffer list.  

This feels like some sort of misguided attempt to 
encode the visibility of a buffer in the buffer list in the buffer name
itself, but it harms users when the buffer *ought* to start with a space
