Not on a tty.  On a tty, the default face has unspecified colors,
unless you invoke Emacs with explicit -fg and -bg switches.

Try "M-x apropos-documentation RET unspecified-bg RET".

I believe you, I just want to understand what you are saying, and I
don't always have time to try out everything myself.  Would you please
