I'm not interested personally, but I've copied to bug-gnu-emacs in
case anyone else wants to take them on.  Thanks for the contribution
anyhow.

I don't like strident smilies, which distract from the text.  [I also
don't like the amount of effort expended on that stuff :-/.  It was
originally a sort of demo/exercise for the new display, and probably
shouldn't have been turned on by default.]

I think it's better to render smilies textually as ☺, ☹ and ☻ (U+263A,
U+2639 and U+263B), not with graphics.
