 of 2001-10-23 on rm50
configured using `configure  --prefix=/lsi/soft/misc'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I used an emacs telnet window to change my password on a machine.  The
initial, new, and repeated new passwords were entered, the "passwd"
command was ok with the changes ... but the modeline still had the
"password" prompt visible and was still consuming characters.

I had to do C-x o to go to the mode line and then press C-g to cancel
it.
