Tiny fonts in Emacs 21.1

When installing Emacs, Version 21.1, ./configure and make runs
smoothly with no indication of error.
However, trying
   ./src/emacs
I get the message
   No fonts match `-*-fixed-medium-r-*--6-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1'
and nothing more.

Using xfontsel, I find that this tiny font is not installed but
`-*-fixed-medium-r-*--7-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1' and higher are.
Only ./src/emacs -nw works, but what is then the purpose of upgrading?

I have no experience in this, but I might be able to find the missing
font on the Net and install it after reading about font installing.
But as this tiny font is not part of an ordinary XFree86, Version 4, can
the requirement of it not be considered a bug?

Best regards,
Soren Buhl, Denmark
