I think I see the problem. In .Xresources, I specified:

Emacs.Font:-schumacher-clean-medium-r-normal-*-*-130-*-*-c-*-iso646.1991-irv

Removing this X resource solved the problem. The default Emacs font
(-Adobe-Courier-Medium-R-Normal--12-120-75-75-M-70-ISO8859-1) and some
others work fine with eshell. Other fonts, such as schumacher-clean,
avantgarde, and helvetica, do not.
