Problem with Fortran 77 '\'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

The Fortran 77 standard does not treat \ as a special character.  With code
such as 

     if (BUF(I:I) .eq. '\') BUF(I:) = ' '

Fortran mode in emacs does not recognize the second ' in '\' as the end of the
character constant, with the result that the color displayed for the code that
follows is if it were part of a character literal.
