Eli, I had the same symptoms (several times) with the distributed
Emacs 21.1, but had not even once with CVS version. The functions
in the distributed Emacs 21.1 are incompatible with Emacs 20.
I know Gerd changed the argument order of various functions in
replace.el (including `perform-replace').

I compared the 2 versions of replace.el but could not find the reason
for the reported errors. May be `perform-replace' is called from
functions external to replace.el.
