Emacs predates most of these other editors, and has a large group of 
devoted users who are used to the default bindings.  It would be insane 
for Emacs to change the default bindings now, when Alt-n etc. are already 
taken for other useful commands.

However, nothing should stop you from redefining theses keys as you see 
fit, since all key bindings in Emacs are customizable.

Why not simply "Ctrl-x b"?  If you don't remember the buffer you want to 
switch to, press `?' and Emacs will pop up a list of buffers; then just 
type the name of the one you want.  In many cases, just hitting RET is 
all you need, since the suggested default is what you'd want.
