I think the default, or most common way for emacs to tell users
about non printing characters is via octal codes.  However octal codes
may not be the most common way folks talk about these characters these
days.  Maybe one could tell emacs "please tell me hex" instead.  [No,
I'm not talking about C-x =, I'm taking about C-x C-r
some_binary_file, M-! head some_binary_file, etc.
