Actually, for testing purposes, there's a much easier way. Instead of
patching mule-conf.el and dumping Emacs, put the additional code I sent
on your .emacs, or in some separate file that you can byte-compile and
load from .emacs. After that, you should be able to use the new coding
system as I described.
