insecure password handling in emacs shell

OS:      Debian/GNU Linux i386 2r
BUG:     when telnet (rlogin,etc.) invoked from emacs shell, 
         emacs DOES NOT SUPPRESS PASSWORD ECHOING,
         so one can see it! Moreover, it appears in
         *Messages* buffer and in .emacs-saves... file!
HOW TO DETECT BUG:
        just start shell ( M-x shell) and type: telnet _some_host. 
Emacs will echo EVERYTHING after password: prompt.
