Suggestion for query-replace-regexp

From: Tom Tromey
Subject: Suggestion for query-replace-regexp
Date: 19 Feb 2002 17:54:26 -0700

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!!
Please write in English, because the Emacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

In GNU Emacs 20.5.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit)
 of Mon Feb 21 2000 on porky.devel.redhat.com
configured using `configure --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib
--sharedstatedir=/var --with-gcc --with-pop --with-x-toolkit
i386-redhat-linux-gnu'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I think it would be convenient if query-replace-regexp could somehow
display the replacement. Right now it highlights the text to be
replaced, which is very nice, but it would help to see what it plans
to do with the text. Alternatively, differently highlighting the
match info, or even better the match info that is used by the
replacement text, would also help. Sometimes it isn't easy to look
and see what part of the text will be used for a given part of the
match info.
