I'm afraid that's a wrong analysis.  "aantal" is the subject, not
"manieren".  The latter is a complement of "aantal".  The
ambiguity is that "aantal" is semantically plural, syntactically
singular however, hence both forms are possible, depending on
what the stress is in the sentence.  Between native speakers,
there may be disagreement on what is the best form (for instance
;-).  From what I have found in a quick web search, the support
for your proposal is the weakest (see e.g.
http://www.onzetaal.nl/renkema/tuin.html).  I don't have the ANS
handy here, but I bet you'll find the same there.

If you reply to this, I propose to take it off line from the bugs
list.
