The principle of minimum effort was at work. This was the easiest way to
get the behaviour you wanted. It was not intended as anything more than a
quick hack (it might break stuff for all I know, though not so far for me).
Change from "X" to ">" if you like - surely no-one should be allowed to use
">" as the attribution string for level one citing?! If having *any* kind
of restriction on the available value offends your sensibilities, well, you
could always do it better.

You do know that Supercite supports the traditional nested form of
citation, as controlled by the variable `sc-nested-citation-p'? And that
there is even a keybinding (default C-c C-p C-t s) to toggle this variable?

It's not a fix because it's not a bug (I think). From an objective point of
view, changing this probably makes Supercite behave worse rather than
better.

I guess just posting some code to this list counts as "submitted". I'm sure
people would feel free to use it if they wanted, and ignore it if they
didn't.

BTW, is anyone currently working on adapting the version of Supercite 4
alpha that's floating around (http://www.wooz.org/users/barry/betas/) for
Emacs?
