Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Run "xterm -bg black -fg wheat". This results in a nice, black xterm.
Start emacs. Then run "(frame-parameter (selected-frame) 'background-mode)", 
and 
you'll get the answer "light". This results in many colour schemes (like the 
ones 
used for M-x shell) becoming unreadable
