Thank for reporting this, but I cannot reproduce this on my system
(also a Debian GNU/Linux).

Please post those lines.  Do you observe the problem with an empty
.emacs file as well?

Does it happen with every font you have in the menu popped up by
Emacs when you press S-mouse-1?  Or do some fonts work?
