compression on emacs

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:


On Emacs 20.7 I could use the compression transparently eg on dired
mode I uncompression "on the fly" was performed such that a
file.txt.gz or file.txt.Z was read without problems without the need
of running gunzip or (Z) 


If I remember well this was due to the following commands
