gnus/nnmh and large article numbers

In GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (i386--freebsd, X toolkit)
 of Thu Jul 27 2000 on vran.herceg.de
configured using `configure  --with-x-toolkit --with-pop --prefix=/usr/local 
i386--freebsd'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Consider the following line:

(format "%s %d %d y\n" "at.verkehr.bahn" 4133556802.0 4133556812.0)

which gives an arithmetic error. This sort of format function call is
used in the function nnmh-request-list-1 (in gnus 5.9.0, file
gnus/nnmh.el) for newsgroups with large article numbers.
