There is a bug in autosave of Emacs 21.2:
Make sure that the directory ~/.emacs.d has no write permissions and
doesn't have subdirectory auto-save-list. Start emacs and type
M-x do-auto-save RET; emacs will complain that it can't create the
directory ~/.emacs.d/auto-save-list (but no autosave actually occurs
even if there are modified buffers). Type C-x C-c; emacs aborts.
