dired-diff inhospitable to wildcard entry

I was using the = command in dired and it wouldn't let me even type in
this wildcard [that only matches one file, if you must know.]
Diff 3-all.txt with: (default 3-all.ben_5level) 
~/jidanni.org/lang/dongshike/books/*3*

By the way, I cut and pasted that line from the minibuffer using the
mouse, into this *news* buffer, and the C-a, C-e keys still act funny
even in the *news* buffer, around it.
