C compiler can not create executables

Hello, I tried to install the emacs-21.2 version in SGIO2+ computer
running IRIX6.5. I typed in the ./configure commands with the following
returned error messages: 

creating cache ./config.cache 
checking host system type... mips-sgi-irix6.5 
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc...
cc checking whether the C compiler (cc ) works... no 
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

I also tried to configure without the gcc option, but can not pass through
the make process.  I wonder if I need to install the gcc3.04 package.
Thank you very much if you could give me some suggestions of how to
by-pass this problem.
