why doesn't *Directory* buffer get out of my face when I hit q? |

$ emacs -nw /tmp
C-x C-d RET C-x o q but the buffer does not go away, sometimes it does
but that's after doing some other things sometimes...
P.S. Doing C-h m in that buffer, one sees these, the differences of
which, Q vs. q, E vs. e, are not clearly spelled out:
q quit View mode, trying to restore window and buffer to previous state.
q is the normal way to leave view mode.
e exit View mode but stay in current buffer. Use this if you started
viewing a buffer (file) and find out you want to edit it.
E exit View mode and make the current buffer editable.
Q quit View mode, trying to restore windows and buffer to previous state.
