busy dired repaints screen only 95% returning from other x window

When dired is off busy processing some commands, it might forget to
repaint all the several minibuffer bars on a segmented window, when
returning to emacs after switching to another x window, say with
alt-tab alt-tab in icewm

first in emacs do

C-x 2 <escape> ! <escape> p <return> C-x d <return> 
m m m m ! s l e e p SPC 5 5 SPC # <return>

and while it is waiting, switch back and forth in and out of emacs and
other x windows.
