Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Hello,

this is not a real bug - rather a suggestion: I would 
strongly suggest that the default extension binding in 
auto-mode-alist was such that "\\.tex'" was associated 
with latex-mode, and *not* tex-mode. Currently the 
extension "\\.ltx'" is associated with latex-mode - but 
really who uses that extension when editing latex-files?
