The unicode branch changed the way map-char-table works and that breaks css-mode.el. I haven't used that branch yet, so haven't fixed it yet.

        or an incompatible backward change. Because it complains about the
        (0 . 65536) arg to aset, even though that comes straight from
        map-char-table and map-char-table's docstring says
        explicitly:

Hello,

I'm having trouble running Stefan Monnier's css-mode with a build from the
xft-enabled unicode-2 branch.

When I load up the mode, I see:

Wrong type argument: integerp, (0 . 65535)

   The key is always a possible IDX argument to `aref'.
