Nor am I, but this might be a clue.  I have emacs-22.1 installed
as `gemacs' for now.

        $ ldd $(whence gemacs) | grep thread
                libpthread.so.1 =>       /lib/libpthread.so.1
        $ ldd $(whence gnome-terminal) | grep thread
                libpthread.so.1 =>       /lib/libpthread.so.1
                libgthread-2.0.so.0 =>   /usr/lib/libgthread-2.0.so.0
                libthread.so.1 =>        /lib/libthread.so.1
