problem with openning emacs after installation of emacs-22.1

I have just downloaded the version emacs-22.1 of GNU Emacs (file 
emacs-22.1.tar.gz from http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/ ) and the 
installation occurred without error apparently (using the commands: 
'./configure --with-X', then 'make bootstrap', then 'sudo make install', 
in an Xterm). However, I cannot open emacs. Here is a copy of the Xterm 
window when I try to edit a text file:

~>emacs toto.txt &
[1] 279
~>
[1]  + suspended (tty output)  emacs toto.txt
~>
