Hi there!

On today's CVS HEAD version (don't know if it's been the case for a
longer time).

$ emacs -Q
M-x set-default-font RET (Select a neutral font, such as
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1 )
M-x fundamental-mode RET
Write something like
Latin-1 includes the `ü' character, with the ¨ diacritic.
Select the text, and M-o b ; the ü and ¨ characters wont be boldened.
