I am still having trouble with fonts.  It seems impossible to use the
-fn command-line option, and also 

      (setq default-frame-alist
            '((width            . 80)
              (font . "-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal-*-120-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1")
              (icon-type        . t)      ; gnu picture as Emacs icon
              ))

fails
