Typing "C-u M-x rmail RET FOO RET" where FOO is an Rmail file in BABYL
format signals an error, after it finishes writing the converted
messages to a temporary file:

  rmail-error-bad-format: Message 1 is not a valid RFC2822 message

I'm guessing this is because the converted file has DOS CR-LF EOLs,
and Emacs reads it with no-conversion, and then looks for some
telltale string that ends with a newline, but does not include a ^M
character.

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
d:/gnu/emacs/etc/DEBUG for instructions.

Fixed by this change:

2009-01-30  Eli Zaretskii  <eliz@gnu.org>

        * mail/rmail.el (rmail-convert-babyl-to-mbox): Bind
        coding-system-for-read to `raw-text', and use insert-file-contents
        instead of insert-file-contents-literally. Fixes bug #2019.
