OK, I filed

Do consider reverting your changes, as I'm afraid they didn't end up
solving the bug, but instead just ended up making emacs smaller for new
users. Sorry about that.

It is almost always easier to enlarge a window than shrinking a window that is too big for the screen. Experienced user can set the sizes they want.
