bug#6059: auctex, emacs23 crashes in latex mode when encountering `^'

when i try to type:
$2^3$
in LaTex mode, the emacs23 crashes encountering the symbol `^'

what's more, i could not even open a latex file in latex mode containing
the string above.

What can i do?
