Hi Óscar,

Since version 13.1 it is needed to add 'face symbol into `whitespace-style' to enable blank face visualization.

So, the proper setting should be:

(setq whitespace-style '(face lines-tail))

From `whitespace-style' docstring:

One reason for not visualize spaces via faces (if `face' is not
included in `whitespace-style') is to use exclusively for
cleanning up a buffer. See `whitespace-cleanup' and
    `whitespace-cleanup-region' for documentation.

Best regards,

Vinicius

emacs -Q

In *scratch* buffer eval this:
(setq whitespace-style '(lines-tail))
(whitespace-mode)

Now type a line of text with mode than 80 characteres.

Until recently, the characters after the 80th column were highlighted
with a prominent background color, which is the documented behavior.
